WTA Italian Open live scores, results today, draws
The Italian Open is a WTA Premier tournament that takes place just before the French Open. Experts consider it as crucial preparation ahead of the French Grand Slam tournament.
The 2021 edition of the WTA Rome Masters, however, will be much more than that. It will feature the most in-form female tennis stars, and they will all come to the Italian capital with only one goal - to win at those famed Italian clay courts.
Rome WTA 2021 Favourites
Simona Halep won the Italian Open in 2020, and she will be the main favourite for the title when the creme de la creme of women's tennis gets together at the WTA Rome Masters tennis 2021 tournament.
The Romanian won her first Italian Open title in 2020 when she entered the tournament as the top-seeded player. She defeated the defending champion Karolina Pliskova in the final after the Czech retired due to injury.
That 2020 Italian Open triumph was a long time coming for Halep as that was her third appearance in the final in the last four years. In the other two final appearances, the Romanian lost to Elina Svitolina.
And Svitolina will probably be the second favourite to win the tournament. The Ukrainian still hasn't won a Grand Slam tournament but managed to win the 2018 WTA Finals, her most illustrious triumph to date. Moreover, the Italian Open seems to be Svitolina's favourite hunting ground as that's the only tournament that she has won more than once.
In addition to Halep and Svitolina, tennis fans should also take into consideration the likes of 2019 Italian Open winner Karolina Pliskova, and the always dangerous Naomi Osaka and Ashleigh Barty.
Both Osaka and Barty pulled out of the Italian Open in 2020 due to fears related to the pandemic, but will likely appear in 2021.
