About Alexander Volkov
The Russian tennis player Alexander Volkov started playing professionally in 1988. But long before that, he had begun playing tennis as a right-hander, at the age of 10. However, a severe accident caused and led to his fractured shoulder. Alex had to rest for six months, during which he thought of shifting to other sports.
However, he eventually thought of giving tennis another try and began playing with it as a left-hander. At Kaliningrad Tennis Club, he trained immensely to improvise his game.
It was in 1988, and he reached the finals of the USSR National Championships. He was so good at this that he played like a pro on all the surfaces. In the 1990 US Open, he defeated the then world No.1, Stefan Edberg, in the first round. Next year, he grabbed his first singles title at Milan. However, he lost the match at Wimbledon the same year.
He kept his game up and continued to play, win and lose some tournaments. These include Kremlin Cup in Moscow, Davis Cup and so on. He reached his career-high rank in 1994 as World No. 14. By 1998, he retired from his decade-old tennis career. During his entire career, he was able to accumulate prize money of a whopping $3,362,840.
Unfortunately, Alexander Volkov passed away in 2019 in Kaliningrad, Russia. But his superb career will be remembered by tennis admirers forever.Â
