About Roger Federer

Roger Federer

Roger Federer is a Swiss tennis player who dominated the sport in the early 21st century with his outstanding all-around game. He was born on August 8, 1981, in Basel, Switzerland. He holds the record for most career men’s singles Grand Slam titles which are 20. However, Rafael Nadal later matched this.

Federer began playing tennis at eight and won the Swiss junior championship at fourteen years old. In 1999, Federer made his Davis Cup debut for Switzerland and became the world’s youngest tennis player at 18 years, finishing the year in the top 100 players.

Jimmy Connors, who is a tennis legend, once said: “In an era of specialist, you’re either a clay court specialist, a grass court specialist, or a hard court specialist… or you’re Roger Federer.” Roger is a versatile all-court player noted for his quickness, elegant style of play and excellent shot-making. Federer prefers to play from the baseline, but he is also adept at volleying and is one of the best volleyers in the game. He has a powerful, precise smash and can execute unusual professional tennis moves like the backhand smash and skyhook, half-volley, jump smash and offensive serve.

It is worth noting that Federer became the first living citizen to be honoured on Swiss coins in December 2019.
